Symptoms

Children
Signs of lead poisoning may not become noticeable until the level is very dangerous or they may be mistaken for the flu or other illness.
  • Damage to the brain and nervous system
  • Behavior and learning problems (such as hyperactivity)
  • Slowed growth
  • Hearing problems
  • Headaches
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting
  • Sleep disorders
  • Poor appetite
  • Constipation
  • Weakness
  • Stomach-ache
  • Lead can lead to a low blood count (anemia)
  • Higher amounts of lead exposure can damage the, kidneys.
  • Very high exposure can lead to seizures or death.
Because children may have no symptoms at all, it is easier to prevent lead poisoning than to treat it.

Blood Lead Test
Because the symptoms arenąt obvious, the only way to know for sure is to have a blood lead test.

Blood lead levels are measured in micrograms per deciliter (µg/dl) of blood. If you or your children have blood lead levels at or above 10 µg/dl, you need to be concerned and talk to your doctor or clinic. The only way to know if you have lead in your body is to have your blood tested.

Studies have shown an increased risk for these problems if your child has or had a blood lead level at or above:
  • 10ug/dL - learning disabilities, developmental problems, lower IQ, hypertension, behavior problems, and dental cavities
  • 20ug/dL - nerve problems, slower reflexes
  • 40ug/dL - anemia
  • 60ug/dL - kidney damage, stomach aches
  • 80ug/dL - brain swelling, coma, convulsions
  • 100ug/dL- or greater death is possible

Adults
Lead is also harmful to adults. Adults can suffer from:
  • Difficulties during pregnancy
  • Other reproductive problems (in both men and women)
  • High blood pressure
  • Digestive problems
  • Nerve disorders
  • Memory and concentration problems
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Lead is considered to be particularly harmful for women's ability to reproduce
