Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance is committed to working within the diverse communities of Omaha to prevent and eliminate childhood lead poisoning. We believe that by engaging students in our mission,
we will not only have more success with our programs, but we can also provide an invaluable service to students of any discipline. The OHKA service learning program provides:
- Training to students on the various aspects of lead poisoning
- A look at environmental hazards in general
- An opportunity for hands-on experiences within the community
- The potential for working and networking with community leaders in Omaha
- A multi-cultural approach to education and outreach
The majority of the projects we have would be ideal for students looking to use foreign language skills or to gain a multi-cultural experience while educating people about the number one environmental
hazard for children. Here are just some of the projects we can offer to students:
- Home dust kit program. Our current pilot program offers free home lead dust testing kits to anyone residing in a home built before 1978. Students can assist with distributing the kits or assisting people with testing their homes for lead.
- Door-to-door campaign. Groups of students can distribute materials, teach people about cleaning for lead or help identify home lead hazards by going door-to-door.
- Education for elementary schools. We are always looking for creative ways to educate young children about lead. Materials such as posters, coloring books and flyers are just some of the items that could be created and distributed to schools in Omaha.
- Legal projects. Students in other cities have created a lead law clinic in their law schools, developed the curriculum for a class on lead and assisted with the development of legislation and city ordinances to protect people from lead hazards.
- Landscaping projects. We can teach your group about lead-safe landscaping which you could then use as a group project to help an Omaha neighborhood.
- Lead-safe home projects. We can instruct your group on lead-safe work practices and you can then assist someone by making their home lead-safe. This is a great opportunity for a large group looking for a one time project.
- Science projects. We work with environmental companies who test for lead. Let us know what kinds of projects you are interested in and we may be able to assist you in finding something in the community.
- Technology projects. Your group could create an interactive website to teach people how to identify lead in homes.
- Theatre projects. ClearCorps has developed a play to educate people about lead poisoning. The play could be performed by your group and presented to people of all ages.
- Fairs and events. We have had students host a lead poisoning prevention fair.
- Fundraising. Students can host an event to raise money and awareness for lead poisoning prevention. Talk to us about any ideas you have.
