Get Tested
Any home built before 1978 should be checked by a trained professional for lead based paint. You can get your home tested in one of two ways, or both:
A paint inspection tells you the lead content of every different type of painted surface in your home. It won't tell you whether the paint is a hazard or how you should deal with it.

A risk assessment tells you if there are any sources of serious lead exposure (such as peeling paint and lead dust). It also tells you what actions to take to address these hazards.

To find a qualified State Licensed Lead Inspector or State Lead Risk Assessor from Nebraska Health and Human Services click here for current listings.

You may qualify for a FREE home lead testing services. Contact the Douglas County Health Department to see if you qualify for a free lead inspection.

If you have a garden, plant fruits and vegetables in a raised flower bed or at least 3 feet from the outside walls of your house to avoid getting paint chips in soil of your garden. Be safe and have soil tested before planting a garden.

The most important thing to do is get to know the law.
